Legal Music Search is a Google Powered Search Engine which has spidered well over 500+ Legal Music sites. Streaming Music as well as full track downloads, clips, reviews and more! We primarily support Independent Artists however you will find quite a few Main Stream songs legally through this engine as well. Due to the RIAA having their heads planted firmly up their butts however, the Independent Music does greatly outnumber the amount of Main Stream stuff you'll find in the search results.

This service has been brought to you by Time Warrior (Dave Kelso) who is an individial, not a huge corporation. This means that if you feel this site is lacking some of the bells and whistles you might enjoy on other sites, that it might be a good idea to voulenter your help if you know how to code in any sort of web based programming language. Seeing as this site is being made available to you freely at the expense of an individual -- and absolutely no profit has yet to be made: we hope you enjoy what is here as opposed to bitching about what isn't. I mean hey, it's free. Use it. Enjoy it.

We'd like to bring to your attention some very powerful (and of course, free) multimedia tools that we think you're really going to enjoy!

The MODPlug Tracker is free, powerful software that enables you to easily create music on your Windows-based PC using instruments freely available on the internet. It also works spectacularly under Linux using WINE.

You can find a lot of free instruments libraries by using Legal Music Search as well as taking songs other people have made and extracting the instruments. Music Modules or "mods" as they tend to be called, are similar to midi -- only you are brigning your own wave table as opposed to being held hostage by the limited one built into your sound card.

What does this mean? It means high quality music using the least amount of disk space. Awesome tunes, less download time! This also make the music "open source" so other peoples songs are easily remixed. This type of music is by default Creative Commons License and therefore any remixing or distribution of said content won't get you into a world of trouble.

You can also easily convert midi to module. Mod music is supported by all of the worlds most popular Media Players used by most Operating Systems! For more information, please visit modplug.com

Audacity is a free, yet very capable, Audio Editor software application for Windows, Macintosh and Linux/Unix systems. It is very similar to (and in our opinion, more powerful than) commercial softwares such as Propellarheads Reason or Adobe Audition.

Audacity was started in 1999 as part of a research project, then over time was developed into a general audio editor. More recently (the mid-years) other people started helping with development. Today, Audacity is being developed by a team of volunteers under the open-source model, using Sourceforge, an online site that allows people around the world to collaborate on free software projects. Dozens of people have contributed to Audacity, and progress is continually accelerating. Audacity is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) . You are free to use this program for personal or commercial purposes. Audacity is now localized to many languages other than English.

In my (Time Warrior) own personal experiences, audacity has been a great tool to be used in conjunction with Modplug Tracker. For more information about Audacity, please visit audacityteam.org

Special thanks to Shadowmom for bringing this software to my attention awhile back :-)

DownloadHelper is a tool for web content extraction. Its purpose is to capture video and image files from many sites.

Just surf the Web as you are used to, when DownloadHelper detects it can do something for you, the icon gets animated and a menu allows you to download files by simply clicking an item

For instance, if you go to a YouTube page, you'll be able to download the video directly on your file system. It also works with MySpace, Google videos, DailyMotion, Porkolt, iFilm, DreamHost and others.

When you are on a page containing links to images or movies, you can download some or all of them at once. Moving the mouse over the items in the menu will highlights the links directly in the page to make sure they are the ones you want to pick up.

DownloadHelper also allows you to download files one by one, so that you keep bandwidth to surf for other stuff to download.

To modify your preferences, like changing the download directory, right-click on the icon and choose "Preferences".

When you first install the extension, your browser is redirected to a welcome page with links to a user manual at http://www.downloadhelper.net/manual.php and a faq at http://www.downloadhelper.net/faq.php

This does not change your homepage setting and the welcome page won't appear anymore.

Support can be obtained from http://www.downloadhelper.net/support.php

If you are a musician -- this is an awesome tool for sites that allow the streaming of your music to also be used as a backup site. Lets say you have a hard disk failure for example. Normally, streaming means there is no "click to download" link. Well now using this tool -- you will be able to reclaim your music that had been lost when your hard drive went bye-bye.

It is also great for using sites such as Facebook or Flickr as photo album backups! This way, reclaiming hundreds or thousands of pictures isn't such an annoying venture.

For more information, please visit them on Mozilla's Extensions Site.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Does this FAQ also double as a Terms of Use Agreement for this website?

A: Yes :-)

Q: How is LMS different from the zillion other Music Search Sites out there?

A: We're trying to make those zillion other music sites available from one place, as opposed to you having to spend countless hours finding them yourself and making your browser bookmarks list larger than the genitalia of a male gorilla. So instead of re-inventing the wheel, we're making available everyone elses wheels. Sure, we'll be hosting some of our own legal music and all that good stuff. However our primary focus is to make everything else thats available and worth checking out easy to find in one place.

Q: Is copyright infringement "stealing"?

A: Nope, it's copyright infringement. So lets toss out the RIAA Propaganda Machine and give you the real difference between the two. If we break into your car and jack your stereo, thats stealing. Copyright Infringement is (supposed to be, anyways) a violation of fair use. Lets say for example, a friend wants to borrow something from you for a short period of time. Once he or she borrows it -- they decide to borrow it off to 10 other friends before giving it back to you. He or she did not have your permission to do that. So -- infringement is simply someone doing shit with your property without permission. Unfortunately -- the RIAA's issues are neither about copyright nor profits. It is about those with power wanting to keep that power. The internet gives people the ability to put their music out there and become popular without needing to be signed to an RIAA label. So the whole "you'll never work in this town again!" cliche just doesn't hold any wieght anymore. They are struggling to control something that is no longer capable of being controlled.

Q: This is confusing! How do I know if a download is legal or illegal?!

A: P2P Services in and of themselves are not illegal. Think of them as if your walking down a street. Well, every street in every town has laws. Don't liter, don't jay walk, don't get into bar fights, buy a candybar -- don't shop lift it, etc. Well, a lot of stuff on P2P is legal, a lot is illegal. Just like some people on the street still liter, jay walk, etc.. even though there are laws against it. If you don't know how to tell the difference, then don't use p2p. LMS makes available tons of sites where the musicians themselves have released the music out to the world.

Q: Is this engine only for Independent Music or is there a way to get main stream stuff legally, too?

A: The main stream is about money more than talent. Just because an Independent Artist hasn't joined the ranks of the people you are familar with doesn't mean they suck. It just means they aren't rich. The Internet gives you the ability to discover this music where as in the past -- it was practically impossible. Sure, there are avenues for downloading main stream stuff legally and we include as many of those as we can. However -- search services such as LMS will be largely dominated by Independent Music until more RIAA Artists slowly break away from the RIAA and go independent. Tons already have, but they are not the majority. So just be patient. As time goes on -- more and more main stream artists are realizing that it pays more in the long run to play it by your own rules than to be shackled by an RIAA contract.

Q: Some of the music i've found in my searches isn't free! What the heck?!

A: While there is no shortage of FREE legal music, can you blame the artists for wanting to make some money? Purchasing directly from the artists and / or buying "per track" ensures that not only are you getting the best deal for your cash -- but that most of the money is going to support the artist and NOT the RIAA. You can also buy used albums (good condition) and make some quick cash selling your old albums. We spider as many of those types of sites as we can, also. A lot of the sales sites also give away free tracks as well, as opposed to worthless 30 second demo clips. You can also use software to capture Internet Radio Streams (as well as podcasts) just as you would use a tape deck to record FM Radio. We've got lots of Internet Radio stuff spidered, too (although for the moment -- the Internet Radio search is limited to Shoutcast and the Pod Show search limited to Podsafe -- but the regular LMS "find music" search does include a lot more than just those two). You do not need an ipod to listen to podcasts.

Q: I didn't find what I was looking for in my search. Now what?

A: There are several reasons this could happen and several things you can do to try to keep this from happening. The first option you have, is try to be more specific in your key words. The right key words make all the difference in a search. You can also try focusing on genre rather than specific artists. Lets say your preference is rock music. You might input things such as "download free rock music" -- "genre hard rock" - "rock music" -- "free rock and roll" -- "best of hard rock". You can also use the * to make your search more defined. Example: *hard rock* using * and * to "lock in" the key words will get you more results that say "this site has a lot of hard rock" rather than "sometimes it can be hard to find music that rocks". Another suggestion is that if you know of any sites that sell / allow you to download music -- submit the url to LMS so that we can include it. If 500 people each submit 1 url -- thats 500 more sites everyone can enjoy.

Q: Why do some results contain news articles, legal information and that sort of stuff?

A: Because current music / technology events and knowing your legal rights is every bit as important as downloading music.

Q: Why are some results not even music related?

A: Search engines are not perfect. Often times websites that have a lot of music related stuff also welcome other topics of interest. So you ended up with that because the key words you used also happen to have matched some non music stuff (ie: if you used keywords "download legal music" you might end up with an entry that said "legal downloads for music, games, applications and more!")

Q: How lucrative is it to advetise with LMS? Your pages aren't exactly ad intensive.

A: We currently use 3 modes of subtle advertising: BBS Crawler Exchange (main page), Google Adsense (Search Results) and Audio Advertising (LMS!elect Streaming Music). Though most of our audio ads are fake humor content (ie: Blondestar, Northpark, National Marijuana Asocciation, etc...) designed to make people laugh and are in no way, shape or form "serious" or "real" -- we do welcome "real advertisers" to purchase audio advertising -- as long as your real ads are just as corny, amusing and entertaining. We're not against you letting people know you've got a website or some product / service that you want to sell. But we are here to ENTERTAIN people, not bore them to tears as they get marketed to death. So if you think your advertising staff can be silly, politically incorrect, off the wall and creative -- then drop us a line and we'll make a deal.

Q: I'm from the RIAA. We're watching you. Be warned! Ok?!

A: Glad to hear it. Make sure you take notes -- you might learn a thing or two. We've also got a wanring for you, as well. We plan to open up a fair use sub-section of this site that encourges and will make available LEGAL copyrighted content that has been parodied or remixed in accordance to the strict fair use guidelines. Even though this will be completely legal -- we know you're going to have a huge problem with it. We can see that one coming from a mile away. So, please be wanred: giving us any legal hassles will only increase our publicity -- especially as we won't be doing anything illegal. If you attempt to try to hussle us using legal force -- we'll hop the Class Action Suite Band Wagon that Tanya Andersen has got going against you. It wasn't too bright of you to screw with someone who worked for the DOJ, was it?

Q: I'm a Corporate Executive with more money than GOD. Would you consider selling legalmusicsearch.com?

A: Nope. However we are open to negotiations for an alliance that would be worth your time and ours. We enjoy cooperating and working with others to the mutual bennefit of all parties involved. As long as you don't mind thinking outside the box and your corporation is open minded and relaxed, we'd enjoy hearing about any ideas you might have!

Q: I am an IT Professional (or in the music business) and I want to help your service! How can I get that ball rolling?

A: For the geeks among us -- website mirrors, programming talent and things like that would definately be of great assistance. If you're in the music biz and you want to do some premotional stuff, just let us know what you've got in mind.

Q: Once this site gets uber popular, your not going to start charging or anything, are you?

A: Hell no. Doing that would be a sure fire way to kill the site. We'd never be that stupid.

Q: My question wasn't answered on this page, what do I do?

A: Ask Us your question in the "Xpresit - Music Contravery" Forum.

Q: Why should I be forced to ask you in a public forum?!

A: So that everyone can bennefit from the answer, of course. You might not be the only person thinking of the same question.

Q: Do you guys like Metallica?

A: Lars Ulrich can kiss my Legaly Musical Searching ASS. On PBS (Chicago, Channel 11) I was horrified some years back as I watched Lars answer the question of "What do you think about the fans that download mp3s of your music?" with "I don't care about those fans. I DON'T NEED THOSE FANS!". Good music, bad attitude. Remember that interview, Lars? Your fans do. Well, Ex-Fans now, idiot.

Q: If LMS is a BBS Scene Service then WHAT is the BBS Scene?

A: Until we've got time to write a small book that answers this one, we'd suggest checking out Syncdev, Textfiles.com, BBSing.com, BBSmates and The BBS Documentary to get a better idea in the mean time. But in short: It's the first cyberculture to ever exist, which still exists. The BBS Scene *invented* cyberspace. We're not exagerating nor speaking figuratively. I mean what, did you really think Al Gore did it? :-) Try Vinton Cerf and Ward Christensen! :-)

Solicitors vs. Syndication

This section is simply in reply to some questions I keep getting, so I'm trying to answer them before they're even asked. Hopefully if you're one of the people with questions about this, that this section answers your questions to your satisfaction. If not, let me know and chances are it'll get added here because it is highly probable that other people will want to know the same thing.

You might notice there is a small amount of advertising on this site. So one question I've been asked is "how much do you make from the advertising?" and the answer so far unfortunately is ZERO. Nada. Nothing. I'll explain why, seeing as that tends to be the next question.

It is not easy to make money with advertising unless you have an insane amount of hits traffic. It is double hard for me because of my sense of ethics. I want to syndicate information, not "advertise" in the sense that people think when they see that word. I'm (Dave Kelso aka Time Warrior) personally sick and tired of pages being plastered with ads that contain utterly useless (and annoying) information, that also typically tends to link to spyware sites and scams. I'll not have my sites contributing to that problem.

The difference between solicitors and information syndication, is that solicitors are assholes. Right now the only banners I have on here contain my other sites as well as some sites of friends and colligues. Absolutely no one is paying me one penny for it. In the future I plan to have a pay / business end to the Ad Exchange -- as well as keeping the bulk of the service FREE for the non-profit sites (those tend to have better quality than the commercial corporate garbage). I also eventually want to impliment some pay per impression adverising because pay per click (aka Google Ads and things like that) don't pay anything unless someone bothers clicking them. Pay per impression servies also allow you to control what ads get displayed or not. So I'd be able to personally kill off all the garbage and only keep the good stuff.

Right now I use Google Ads sparingly on some of my sites. I don't even like using them at all. But I figure a tiny bit couldn't hurt as long as I don't get crazy with them. Pissing off your visitors is not the best of ideas.

If you click on our Google Ads, I won't even receive a penny from that until the total amount reaches $100. Most people don't want to click them. Most people therefore do not click them. So I've yet to make anything from that and I'm not gonna hold my breath waiting for a paycheck from it.

If you click on the BBS Crawler Exchange Banners I have on here, you'll sometimes get a dead link because my exchange service is in beta testing. Or, you'll get one of my other sites or the site of a friend / colligue. I've not taken an exact count but currently theres maybe only about 30 banners in rotation, total.

I'm also hoping to maybe do some sort of audio sponsorship stuff later within the LMS Jukebox. I'm open to small monetary donations in exchange for my implimenting a site button for awhile or something, as long as your site doesn't suck.

Hopefully this answers your questions. I run this site for free and at my own expense. If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up.

If you want to help, have no money to spare but are good with web programming languages, coders would definately help improve the site by implimenting some more advanced features.
